The formula
EFF = (PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK − Missed FG − Missed FT − TO) ÷ Games played
Everything a player contributes is added, everything they cost is subtracted, and the total is divided by games played. That last division is what makes it comparable between a starter and a bench player — something the raw box score never is.

A worked example
Take a fictional wing over one game: 3 free throws made of 4, 5 two-point field goals of 11, 1 three of 4, 3 offensive rebounds, 5 defensive, 4 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 3 turnovers.
- Points: 3 free throws + (5 × 2) + (1 × 3) = 16
- Positives: 16 points + 8 rebounds + 4 assists + 2 steals + 1 block = 31
- Negatives: 9 missed field goals + 1 missed free throw + 3 turnovers = 13
- EFF over one game: (31 − 13) ÷ 1 = 18
EFF: 18.0. Note that fouls do not appear anywhere — that is the main thing separating EFF from the European PIR.
What a good efficiency looks like
NBA benchmarks do not transfer. A 25 EFF is an All-Star season in the NBA, over 36 minutes a night. In rec and travel basketball, with shorter games and wider rotations, the scale sits lower.

What efficiency does not tell you
It puts everything on one scale. A defensive rebound is worth one point, an assist is worth one point, a turnover costs one. No coach would sign that equivalence if you put it to them in those words.
It ignores fouls entirely — both drawn and committed. A player who fouls out in twelve minutes and one who never fouls are treated identically.
It punishes the player who takes the hard shots. Whoever the team asks to create late in the clock will miss more, and their efficiency drops for doing the job.
It rewards volume. Over a youth season it mostly identifies who has the ball, which is information — but not the information most people think they are reading.
And it says nothing about defence that does not show up in the box score: positioning, help, deterring a shot. A rim protector who never blocks is invisible here.
