The formula
eFG% = (FGM + 0.5 × 3PM) ÷ FGA
The 0.5 is exactly what a three adds: it is worth one and a half times a two, so every made three counts as half an extra make. That is the whole idea, and there is nothing else to it.

A worked example
Same player again: 5 two-point field goals made of 11 attempted, 1 three made of 4 attempted.
- Field goals made: 5 + 1 = 6, on 15 attempts
- Raw percentage: 6 ÷ 15 = 40.0%
- Three-point bonus: 0.5 × 1 = 0.5
- eFG%: (6 + 0.5) ÷ 15 = 43.3%
eFG%: 43.3%, against 40.0% raw. The gap between the two is precisely what the three-point shot returned.
What a good eFG% looks like
eFG% almost always reads slightly below the same player's true shooting, because it ignores free throws — which are the easiest shots on the floor. These bands are for amateur basketball, over a season.

What eFG% does not tell you
It ignores free throws, and therefore ignores everything a foul-drawing player does. Two players at the same eFG%, one of whom gets to the line twenty times, are not equally efficient — that gap is exactly what true shooting measures.
It says nothing about shot difficulty, or about who created the shot. An open catch-and-shoot and a contested pull-up count the same.
Like every percentage, it lies at low volume. Over three attempts it means nothing.
And it mechanically rewards the three-point shot, including when the three is the wrong choice. A youth team that hoists threes will post a flattering eFG% without playing any better.
