The formula
TS% = PTS ÷ (2 × (FGA + 0.44 × FTA))
A raw field goal percentage treats a three the same as a two and ignores free throws completely. True shooting fixes both: it divides the points a player actually scored by the number of shooting possessions they used, whatever kind of shot those were.
The standard advanced-statistics formula, as defined by Basketball-Reference and used by the NBA.
A worked example
Same fictional wing: 16 points on 15 field goal attempts (11 twos, 4 threes) and 4 free throw attempts.
- Estimated shooting possessions: 15 + (0.44 × 4) = 16.76
- Denominator: 2 × 16.76 = 33.52
- TS%: 16 ÷ 33.52 = 47.7%
TS%: 47.7%. Their raw field goal percentage was 40.0% — true shooting reads higher because it credits the three and the free throws.
What a good true shooting looks like
Professional benchmarks do not apply. 58% is a good NBA season. In amateur basketball, where shots are harder to create and percentages run lower at every level, the scale shifts down.

What true shooting does not tell you
The 0.44 coefficient is an estimate, not a measurement. Not every free throw ends a possession: an and-one extends the play, the first of two does not count. 0.44 is the average observed across large professional samples; over one youth game it is approximate.
It says nothing about shot difficulty. A post player who only finishes at the rim will always out-shoot a guard who creates their own look. Those are different jobs.
It says nothing about volume. 60% on three shots and 60% on fifteen are not the same performance, and the formula cannot tell them apart.
Over a single game it is extremely noisy. Two threes either way move it ten points. It only becomes readable across a dozen games or so.
